Acrylic Painting for Teens

A weekend of painting instruction and play

Ages 13-18 any experience level welcome

A painting workshop designed to give students enough technique to enjoy working with the acrylic medium while fostering a mindset for embracing experimentation.

Day 1: Introduction to acrylic.

Each student will be provided with all the materials to begin to explore the medium of acrylic paint. We will go over concepts including:

  • Color theory & mixing more complex colors from primary colors

  • Layering & Creating depth

  • Blending & Creating a gradient

Painting from life - We will set up a still life to paint from as a group and go over concepts including:

  • Light source

  • Composition

  • Shape and form

Day 2: Creative Play.

Together we will deepen our engagement with painting through a blend of technical instruction, creative improvisation, collaboration, and reflective group dialogue.

The session will be divided into three parts, each introducing a specific painting technique or approach. After each short instructional segment, students will have plenty of time to experiment and create — working freely with color, texture, and imagery in a way that supports self-expression.

This process is intentionally structured but open-ended, allowing students to practice both skill-building and letting go of expectations. The aim is to help teens connect with their creativity in a way that is collaborative, expressive, and empowering.

We’ll close each segment with a group discussion, inviting participants to reflect on what they created and how it relates to themes like emotion, communication, relationship and identity. Parents can expect their teen to leave with a unique work of collaborative art, new artistic tools, and deeper insight into their own creative voice.
