Landscape of Materials and Meaning

weekend landscape painting immersion

For anyone interested in experimenting with different mediums to create art that gives voice to the natural world

IN REVERENCE OF THE SONORAN DESERT

Friday 9/12 5-9pm: Introduction to materials.

Together we will explore various materials for making visual art. I will give a demo on making paint from earth pigments and you will have time to explore this process on your own. I will also introduce acrylics, watercolor, pastels, and colored pencils, guiding the group through some helpful techniques that apply to each medium. We will close by reflecting on the qualities of each material and how it feels to work with them.

Saturday 9/13 9am-4pm: Field Study & Landscape painting.

In the morning, we will meet outside at a private location in the Tucson Mountains to connect with the desert through field studies in the form of plein air sketching, plant identification, and meditation. We will return to the gallery space in the afternoon to start our final artwork. With the field studies as our guide, we will create a landscape using the materials of your choice explored in day 1.

Sunday 9/14 1-4pm: Reflection and connection.

We will begin the class with an opportunity to finish our final art pieces. Individually and as a group we will take some time to be with the art and reflect on aspects of the process that felt meaningful to us. Individual and group reflection
