Rite of Passage
12x22” acrylic and cochineal dyed wool on canvas with cholla bone
2025
A rite of passage
As the red thread dyed with cochineal pierces through the veil
Of a childhood sculpted
in technicolor plastic
A place of retreat
To vibrant imaginary worlds
Filled with Barbie and Lisa Frank
A familiar place of safety
That lives in the fantasy of the mind
With the Sonoran desert
as my witness
I will slowly come out of hiding
stepping through this rite of passage
Boldly I will let my body be the guide
Let the materials decide
To explore more deeply
what it means to be
an embodied woman
In community
With sisters
Fibers as the connecting force
Let’s give voice to tradition
And the power that comes from within
Listen to the body
My body
The body of the earth
This body of work
A testament to
Weaving together
The new with the old
The technology of the future
And the traditions of the past
Natural and synthetic
Honoring all parts
