Superstition Wilderness, Saguaros (Carnegiea gigantea)
Earth pigments gathered on site and processed by hand into paint
The Superstition Mountains have been a place of mysterious inspiration for me ever since I was a kid and my parents would take me hiking there on weekends. I remember coming up with names and stories for the saguaro cacti, reaching toward the sky each with their own unique personalities. As an adult I have made many visits back to this sacred land, doing overnight backpacking trips to Charlebois Canyon, which I have been told was named after my great great grandfather. So perhaps it is in my blood to be drawn to this landscape and after sitting and painting a view of lost dutchman en plein air, an idea for a larger scale oil painting came through me. I'm still not exactly sure why I saw feet in this landscape, but I as I was working on this piece, I realized they stood with the saguaros, facing to watch the sunset together.
